Lying off the west coast of northern Africa, several hundred miles below its native Spanish coast, Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands, is a superb holiday destination with super-long beaches, decent hotels, a laid back atmosphere and some good driving roads for those with cheap Fuerteventura hire cars.
The beaches are Fuerteventura's main attraction and they range from huge, quiet stretches of sand in the south (Jandia), to smaller, busier affairs up near the capital, Puerto del Rosario. Towards the north of the island is Corralejo, which is also known for its beaches as well as for its excellent walking trails; the El Cotillo walk being particularly spectacular.
Getting active on the beaches in Fuerteventura is a major pastime and there are all types of water sports on offer, from jet-skiing and parasailing to windsurfing and sailing. Jandia and Corralejo have the best water sports options. For some culture on Fuerteventura, the former capital of Betancuria in the west of the island is well accessible by rental car and features the excellent Betancuria Museum. Nearby is the 15th century Santa Maria Church.
There's a bit of shopping in the capital and in the main resorts of Fuerteventura, although it is mostly tourist kitsch. Entertainment wise, Fuerteventura is a lot more laid back than the other main Canary Islands of Tenerife and Lanzarote and is mainly hotel based. Saying that, the Jandia region and Corralejo have a decent collection of bars and pubs, while Betancuria is big into the café scene.
If you have a hire car in Fuerteventura you should take advantage of the magnificent countryside and head indland. There are a couple of shortish loops you could do, but bear in mind that the west coast is pretty mountainous while the interior is flatter. Mirador de Morro Velosa makes a nice daytrip by car hire, along with the road between Lajares and Corralejo.
