Offshore from Albania, Corfu is the most popular of Greece's Ionian Islands. Recent development has paved the way for more resorts and infrastructure, and the island looks a bit different than it did two decades ago. With an emphasis on sand and sea, Corfu has a few historical attractions that appeal to those with cheap car hire in Corfu.

Most tourists land at the airport in Corfu Town with its Byzantine architecture and abundant cafés, then head to the east coast where the bulk of the infrastructure resides. The northern coast of Corfu is broad, with well-developed beaches backed by mountains. To the south is an area known for its especially fine sand.

The best beaches in Corfu are found on the west coast and are best reached by car rental from the east coast or Corfu Town via hire car. This is the best place to escape the crowds, with outstanding beaches, Neolithic ruins and hiking trails through the mountains. Byzantine and Hellenistic ruins can be found all along the Kanoni Peninsula.

A broad range of entertainment options are found across the island, with excellent restaurants, beach bars, cultural attractions and discos within easy reach of hotels. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.
