Located in southeastern Europe on the bottom of the Balkan Peninsula, Greece is a popular holiday destination with over 1,400 islands. The country is steeped with history and heritage dating back thousands of years. The main cities are filled with modern attractions and historic cultural activities. One of the best ways to explore Greece is by hire car.

The capital city of Athens is a sprawling metropolis that has a wealth of historic sites to visit including the famous Acropolis, which is a popular tourist attraction. There are countless museums and galleries to visit throughout the city's streets although if you're in need of a break from the history, there are plenty of alfresco cafés, fine restaurants and terraced bars to enjoy.

During the winter months Greece has a number of ski fields to enjoy, some of which are located close to Athens. Mount Parnassos is the largest ski resort in the country and boasts over 20 runs with a vertical drop of 620 metres. Mount Helmos, reachable by car rental, is another resort near to Athens and provides some more challenging runs and breathtaking views of the surrounding region.

Thessaloniki is Greece's second largest city and is home to beautiful cobblestone streets, street side fountains and historic buildings and monuments. There are some interesting museums to visit including the Jewish History Museum, which explains the history of the local Jewish community. Thessaloniki is approximately 500kms from Athens and takes around seven hours to reach by car hire.

With a cheap hire car in Greece there is much to see in the top end of Greece. From Thessaloniki you can drive around 100kms to the famous Mount Olympus, which is the country's and one of Europe's highest mountains at 2,929 metres. An array of beautiful scenery can be seen along the drive here.
