Lesvos or Lesbos is an island in the northern Aegean Sea of Greece. The largest town, Mytilene, also Lesvos' capital, accommodates the one airport that links the island to destinations such as Athens and the United Kingdom. The airport's Greek name, which is Odysseas Elytis, is after a famous 20th century Greek poet. The airport's operations began in 1948 but the first ever charter flight touchdown was not until 1980. Today, the airport serves direct charter flights from Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark and Holland. Domestic scheduled flights are from Athens International Airport and Thessaloniki International Airport respectively. The airport is just a few minutes' drive away from the island's capital and is served by buses and taxis as well as cheap car rental at Lesvos Airport.
