Hungary is famous for its rich heritage and culture, charming Baroque architecture, stunning lakes and excellent wines. The capital, Budapest, lies in the middle of the country, with the Danube River flowing through it and is the centre for business and culture. Budapest's centre is great for walking, and has a good choice of museums and monuments in the Castle area. Also worth a visit is the Royal Palace, containing the National Gallery and across the river, Pest, the newer side of the city with stately buildings and wide boulevards.
There are many other cities to explore in Hungary, some of the best include Pecs, a scenic city sandwiched between the Danube and Dráva rivers, famous for music, opera and ballet and has with many fine museums.
If countryside appeals, you can explore the many old towns in the area with your cheap car hire in Hungary, such as Szentendre built by the Serb settlers in the 17th century or Visegrád, which is known for Solomon's Tower, one of the best preserved Romanesque castles in Central Europe.
Central Hungary also has much to offer with Lake Balaton, just 100kms from Budapest. Here there are hotel resorts and secluded beaches. Siófok is the largest resort with good entertainment, shopping and nightlife.
Hortobagy National Park is also gorgeous; encompassing 520 square kilometres of wilderness, it is home to eagles, herons, egrets, warblers and provides some of the best bird-watching in Europe. You can reach it easily from the city centre with car rental.
